I grew up in the Willamette Valley in Oregon at the base of Mt. Hood – a region in the Northwest corner of the state – where loving nature and planning ahead for the next generation are valued in equal measure. My family always seemed to be involved in local activities and our favorite pastimes – water polo, hiking, camping – often brought together large groups of people – family, old friends, and new ones we met that day. We would come together for good times whether in a national park or someone’s back yard, and all would pitch in to ensure not a trace remained after we were gone. From an early age I knew I wanted to be involved in activities that reflected these values. Celebrate community. Protect nature. Plan for the future. So more good times can follow!
Nowadays when I need a break from work, I enjoy a sport that might seem very different from getting outside to enjoy nature; I get out to race formula cars. Some people might think race car driving is a solitary sport, but believe me it’s very much a team effort. It’s not just the driver that makes a racing season a success. There’s the entire crew, from mechanics to pit support to teammates, not to mention your friends and loved ones in the stands. Together we all make or break a successful season. I’ve been fortunate to win a number of races and a few championships in my beloved Formula Ford, and I have many people to thank for it. I’m a licensed instructor as well as a competitor, and teamwork is the first and last lesson of the day.
I also like formula racing because you have to stay in the moment – perspective comes before and after the race. And yes – so I’m not accused of failing to acknowledge the obvious – racing really gets the adrenaline flowing!
Racing cars and working with cutting-edge technology require similar talents and commitment. Both demand focus, care, and the ability to be courageous without taking unnecessary risk. When undertaking either – whether working on the energy-efficiency of the next computer or driving the next generation of alternatively fueled automobile – the more you know about the subject, the better off you are. And whether inventing a new technology or racing a car, a favorable outcome depends most upon the group of people undertaking the effort. What materials you pick, what car you drive: these choices are important. But skill, attitude, and the ability to see the challenge through make most of the difference between success and failure.
It may come as no surprise that my greatest satisfaction comes from successfully building and running Botsford EcoTech Partners LLC. When I founded this company, the original name, “5-trees,” combined my recreational passions past and present: “trees” from my childhood, and 5, my “employee number” at Cooper Perkins, from which 5-Trees spun off in 2005. As the company has grown and changed, however, I have felt the need for a name that better represents our mission and activities.
Botsford EcoTech Partners LLC strives to provide you with more efficient and effective ways to do what you do best – whatever technology you implement – while adhering to sound environmental practices. Ecological considerations and technological innovations can and will go hand in hand when the right strategies are implemented. And increasingly, this is what the marketplace and the regulatory environment demands. As I collaborate with a number of extraordinary individuals – partners, consultants, employees and you – I never forget – as the name demonstrates – that as the leader of the company, I am first and foremost responsible for its success. Botsford EcoTech Partners LLC: we expect to grow, and we want you to grow and prosper with us.
Let me end by saying, that my recreational pursuits still inform the mission and sensibility of Botsford. Because I believe our customers don’t ever want to have to choose between the environment and technology. And neither do I.
